In the social media landscape, there are six categories which are publishing, sharing, messaging, discussing, collaborating and networking. Facebook, Twitter, and Google are in the midst of these landscapes since they cover almost all of their categories. However many more competitors can be found in each category. But today, let’s learn more about publishing and sharing categories.
Publishing and Sharing as Social Media Landscape
Publishing in the social media landscape is an industry that concentrates on producing and reproducing a literature and information or an activity that makes the information contained in a blog or website. It can be enjoyed by the public. The example is Wikipedia. Encyclopedia projects are discussed in a free and open network, run by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization based in the United States. The Wikipedia name comes from a combination of the word wiki and encyclopedia. Wikipedia was released in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, and is now the largest, fastest growing, and popular reference work on the Internet. The Wikipedia project aims to provide human knowledge. The specialty of Wikipedia is in addition to presenting information commonly found in an encyclopedia, Wikipedia also contains articles that are usually found in almanacs, specialist magazines, and news topics that are still hot. Many people use Wikipedia to complete tasks and homework. Wikipedia began as a side project of Nupedia which is an online free encyclopedia whose articles were written by experts. Larry Sanger, who founded Nupedia with Jimmy Wales, made an idea about the wiki-based encyclopedia on January 10, 2001, on the Nupedia mailing list. Then on January 15, 2001, Wikipedia was officially launched.
Sharing is a facility that is used to share a file. Device and internet connection will be used together in order to save costs and devices. The example is YouTube. It is a video sharing website created by three former PayPal employees namely Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in February 2005. This site allows users to upload, watch, and share videos. The user can display a variety of user-made video content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos. There is also amateur content such as video blogs, short original videos, and educational videos. Most content on YouTube is uploaded by individuals, although media companies such as CBS, BBC, Vevo, Hulu and other organizations have uploaded their material to this site as part of the YouTube partnership program in this social media landscape. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users can upload unlimited amounts of videos.
